Wepwawet Anubis pharaoh Narmer Anput (Middle and New kingdom)

An Egyptian ankh necklace

Horus is today well-known as the god of pharaohs and as the eternal opposant of Set (the Egyptian god of deserts and tempests) in a fight which represents the struggle of good against evil.

About 3500 BC, however, in ancient Egypt, Horus first appeared as a child-god: Horus was called "Har-Pa-Khered" in Egyptian or "Harpocrates" in Greek (meaning "young Horus") disclosing his role of son of Osiris and Isis. Thus, during, the first eras of ancient Egypt, Horus was depicted as a naked boy with his finger in his mouth, sitting with his mother on a lotus flower. This form of Horus is the one of a "fertility god" who often carries a horn of plenty (the Egyptian "Cornucopia").

A pendant from ancient Egypt

About 3000 BC, Horus began to be depicted as a form of the falcon-headed Sun god Ra (especially in the religious capital of ancient Egypt, Heliopolis) and began to be called "Ra-Horus" (or "Ra-Herekhty", a name meaning "Horus of the Sun"). During this era of Egypt, as the Sun god of Egypt, Horus is also the supreme god of the Egyptian pantheon. Therefore, he is naturally the god of pharaohs considered as the supreme non-gods beings.

About 2500 BC, in Egyptian beliefs, Set replaced Horus as the patron god of pharaohs. However, in 2400 BC, the legend of Set's murder of his brother Osiris spread. Indeed, more than ever, Set was depicted as an evil god in the "myth of Osiris" narrating the murder of Horus' father, Osiris, assassinated with cunning by Set to sow chaos in Egypt. For this reason, Horus returned to his position of pharaonic god.
