The Nemes: the lion's mane of pharaohs

The Nemes is a crown made of linen, rather complex, composed of several parts. The Nemes represents a mane of Egyptian lion because this feline was already considered  as the king of all animals in ancient Egypt.

The Nemes is one of the attributes that the pharaoh of Egypt shares with the deities and that differentiates him from common mortals. Contrary to popular belief, only the kings could wear this headgear, considered as the emblem of this position (with the crowns Khepresh, Atef and Pschent).

The Nemes was worn by pharaohs from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period. Indeed, after the death of the last of pharaohs, Cleopatra, there was no more pharaohs in Egypt because it will be led by the Roman Senate.

The Nemes is quite known due to its many representations, including the gold funerary mask of pharaoh Tutankhamen and the head of the sphinx on the Giza Site.
