An ancient Egyptian bracelet
Egypt's greatest wealth since ancient times has been its alluvial soils, fertilized every year by the regular flooding of the Nile, caused by the Ethiopian summer monsoons...
In this situation, ensuring the fertility of the fields depended not so much on their good irrigation, but above all on the efficient drainage of excess water. Most of Egypt's arable land was located in the dense delta region. The situation was different in Upper Egypt, where fertile soils were found only in a narrow valley. This meant that some of it was well above the level of the river. The construction of the irrigation network needed to irrigate them required a lot of work, which promoted social self-organization.
The fact that, in a given situation, Egyptian fields could produce crops two or even three times a year led to the formation of surpluses, which in turn led to the emergence of centralized power. This probably happened earlier in Upper Egypt.
