An ankh bracelet
The "ankh", "crux ansata" or "Egyptian cross" was a hieroglyph meaning life in Egyptian antiquity. By extension, this cross became progressively the symbol of soil fertility and of eternal life.
Ancient Egyptians believed that ankhs were a key given by the gods to access to a prosperous eternal life. Thus, the ankhs were frequently seen under the form of amulets, signs of protection both in the present life and in the afterlife.
An ancient Egypt bracelet
Egypt's special location on the fertile Nile, surrounded on all sides by deserts, mountains, and seas, made the land of the pharaohs extremely safe in antiquity.
The local Libyan and Nubian tribes were at too low a level of development to pose a permanent threat to their large neighbour. This was a unique situation compared to other countries in the former Middle East, allowing political stability and ensuring cultural continuity.
At the same time, contact with the outside world was ensured by the narrow isthmus of the Sinai Peninsula, linking the land of the pharaohs with the neighbouring centers of civilization. Despite the relative peace, it was Lower Egypt, the Sinai's neighbour, that experienced the invasion of the Libyans (people of the sea) and even foreign domination (Hyksosi).
