Wepwawet Anubis pharaoh Narmer Anput (Middle and New kingdom)

A pendant from ancient Egypt

Egyptian society is highly stratified and the social status of each individual is explicitly stated. Farmers make up the vast majority of the population, although they do not own their products or land.

Indeed, agricultural products are held directly by the state, a temple, or a noble family (that owns the land). Farmers are also subject to a labor tax and are obliged to work on irrigation or construction projects through a system of chores.

However, artists and artisans had a higher status than farmers. They worked in stores adjacent to the temples and are paid directly by the Egyptian Treasury with great generosity.
