Who was Horus?
Horus is the pharaoh who succeeded Osiris in Egyptian mythology (because Osiris was killed by his brother, the god Set).
Horus (from the Egyptian Hor/Horou) is one of the oldest Egyptian deities. The most common representations depict him as a hawk crowned with the Pschent. His name means "the Distant One" in reference to the majestic flight proper to the falcon specie. His cult dates back to prehistoric Egypt. The oldest city to have placed itself under his patronage seems to be Nekhen, the "City of the Falcon" (Hierakonpolis).
From the origins, Horus is closely associated with the pharaonic monarchy as a protective and dynastic god. The "Followers of Horus" are thus the first rulers to have placed themselves under his obedience. At the beginning of the historical period, the sacred falcon appeared on King Narmer's stone (Narmer is the first pharaoh of Egypt) and, from then on, was constantly associated with royal power.
