An Egyptian ankh necklace

The sign of life often appeared in ancient Egyptian art. In portrait of mythological scene, the fingers of the deities (who had given the gift of life to all Egyptians) are usually represented as ankhs.

Ancient Egyptians used this symbol of life as amulets of "strength" and of "health".

A pendant from ancient Egypt

Scribes and civil servants formed the upper class in ancient Egypt, referred to as the "white loincloth class" in reference to the white linen garments they wore to indicate their rank.

This upper class emphasizes its social status in art and literature. Just below the nobility are priests and architects who had specialized training in their fields. Although there is no evidence to indicate that slavery was practiced at that time, its possible extent and prevalence remain unknown.
